Today I explored the new city of McKinney, Texas. I drove around with a curious mind and eager spirit. Here I am a stranger in town; a born and bred PNW native wondering what life will be like. I decided it is our common interests that connect us, not a geographic location. I am invigorated by the natural warm climate and constant sunshine here. Adventuring though an urban environment makes me feel right at home as the city was where I grew up.

During this time of year, we often focus on our origins and families. I am grateful for the traditional upbringing I had in Washington. I often reflect on the memory of my grandmother Gloria who brought the family together over extravagant holiday gatherings. She was a creative, talented person, who was modest about her gifts. I think of the traits we share and it brings me strength. I know our shopping excursions taught me about recognizing colors, design and implementing distinctive style. She could discern delicate color shifts and minute details with keen accuracy. We could discuss color names and how they worked together. When I look back, it was similar to an art critique I would have later in college. I believe a lot of design relies on instinct and a critical eye. This was the beginning of learning how to discover mine.

When I look at great art or design, I often think of my grandmother. There were many examples of her sense of style everywhere, from the interior design of her house, to artwork, flower arrangements, clothes, needlepoint to the music she played by ear. I could never pick up an instrument and repeat a song from memory in the same way, but I have many creative hobbies. Most recently I finally learned to cook. I think the learning process is one that should never stop and I recall when she told me she was taking computer lessons at age 90.

Happy Holidays to all the families out there in 2021…
